The patients who choose the beard extraction procedure for their transplants often have this question, “what happens to beard after follicles extraction?” This is a commonly asked question because patients are concerned with the consequences of procedure and they want to know how their beard will look after follicles have been extracted from it.
A beard extraction surgery is the one in which follicles are extracted from the beard rather than the scalp itself and transplanted to scalp to overcome the baldness. This is especially important in such cases when there is excessive hair fall and enough hair follicles are not available on the donor region. In such cases, surgeon may take follicles from other parts of the body and beard is preferred. However what happens to beard after follicles extraction is something the surgeon and patient undergoing the procedure must know.
There are a few changes that take place after follicles extraction from beard. These are described as follows:
POST OPERATIVE CARE
- The patient is advised not to shave the beard region for at least seven days.
- Surgeons also prescribe some oral antibiotics to prevent any bacterial infection happening because of the procedure.
- Sometimes an ointment is also given to soothe the pain and kill any germs overlying the surface.
- Painkillers are also prescribed.
SWELLING ON THE BEARD AREA
Swelling is most common of the things which describe what happens to beard after follicles extraction. There is a noticeable swelling on the donor area specially from the points from where follicles are extracted. It is normal after an extraction procedure and subsides in a week.
MILD BRUISING AND REDNESS
Some people may experience mild bruising after the follicles extraction which is a common thing. There is no need to worry about that until it is not very painful and bleeding. Mild bruising usually settles within few days and the marks also heal slowly.
ITCHING IN THE BEARD REGION
Itching is the also a common sensation noticed in patients after a beard hair follicles extraction. This is a sign of healing and nothing to worry about. It may happen because the donor site is dried and this dryness may cause itching. The removal of follicles may leave the skin with itching and some other sensations.
FORMATION OF CRUSTS/SCABBING
These crusts may form due to the incisions given during extraction. They start forming around the 3rd day of transplant and shed themselves in the coming days. They can be washed by the clinic experts using certain shampoo techniques. However, if the crusts last more than a week, the patient must visit his surgeon and tell him about the complication.
BLEEDING DURING FIRST 24 HRS
In some patients, blood may drip out from the skin during the first 24 hours. It usually settles by applying pressure. If bleeding doesn’t stop, consult your doctor as soon as possible.
TIGHTNESS, NUMBNESS AND TINGLING
The donor site may experience some numbness and tingling. This is due to the disturbance in the nerve ending distribution while taking the follicles out. It usually subsides within a week or two.
RECOVERY OF POST OPERATIVE EFFCTS
Post operative effects are the changes that define what happens to beard after follicles extraction. All of the above are some effects that happen. They usually go completely within 2-3 weeks and patient can continue living his normal life. As beard hairs are an extra reservoir of donor area and these hairs are thick and give you good hair transplant results. One should go for it and select an experienced and expert hair restoration surgeon with proven skills and experience.
