Donor area telogen effluvium

Hair transplant is a complex process that involves many side effects including donor area telogen effluvium after hair transplant which is a common side effect that occurs on the donor area from which patches of follicles are taken to be transplanted onto the recipient area. It happens sometimes that the donor area starts falling hair and becomes bald, because of the stress induced onto that area it starts falling. This process happens in the FUE technique where grafts are taken from the scalp to be transplanted onto the recipient area with the help of incisions, but in some cases the outcome is quite the contrary. The FUT procedure also has a much bigger chance of getting the effluvium because the blood supply in the donor region gets compromised and the area goes bald.

donor area telogen effluvium after hair transplant

In some cases, donor area telogen effluvium after hair transplant triggers because the scarcity of the blood supply causes stress to the donor area and induces shedding but this type gets accommodated in a matter of two to three months when the scalp comes out of the shock and regular blood supply is carried through the scalp. The scalp starts growing hair as soon as it comes out of the shock loss and tiny black dots in the form of hair start appearing and in a matter of months surround the scalp. It is sometimes unclear as to why the blood supply to that part of the scalp gets compromised during surgery as it happens totally unplanned and out of nowhere. The surgeon and the patient experience anxiety in this phase of hair restoration surgery due to the bald patch and also in the area where the transplantation procedure was carried out.

The donor area telogen effluvium after hair transplant surgery should not be understood as alopecia areata because in alopecia a bald patch occurs on the scalp because of the loss of blood supply to the scalp or to that particular area, but it so happens that the shock loss resembles the alopecia but it has a chance to grow back once it starts having blood supply, and this is totally not possible in alopecia as it is a condition on the scalp where hair are not able to grow back because of permanent loss of blood supply. The bald patch can be big or small. It can regrow hair after the shock loss, which happens temporarily, it may take some time but the hair would grow back looking thick and strong. Although it might seem too far-fetched, some medicines can also boost growth of follicles which had not fallen but only the shaft attached to the follicle had fallen off. The follicle remained inside and thus there is a positive chance of it growing back and covering the bald patch.

Due to the complexity of donor area telogen effluvium after hair transplant some medicines are also prescribed to the patient going through the shock loss phase, these include minoxidil which comes under the name of Rogaine and it boosts growth of follicles to help improve quality and quantity. There is another medicine named finasteride which also helps to stop hair fall in men and boosts growth of follicles and desired results are seen in about three months or more. Though minoxidil and finasteride might help in the growth of follicles but they may have a few side effects that include itching, irritation or redness etc. But they are not common among every other patient, some patients might be happy with their growth and would wave off the side effects as part and parcel of the transplant process.

Though donor area telogen effluvium after hair transplant surgery is reported in many cases there are still cases where no shock loss was experienced as it is not something that has to happen to all, but it chooses only a few whose sensitivity towards the surgery is higher than most people and causes the shock loss which can be temporarily hidden with techniques of camouflaging the area with patches of temporary hair, so that when the real hair grow back the patch is taken off and there is no need to hide the spot or area. The shedding of strand after the surgery is usually noticed in around one to five weeks and usually gets puzzled because of the sudden loss because it leads to a bald patch. The people might feel insecure and shy off from public places and they might hide their scalp in gatherings., but it is totally recoverable and takes its own time to regrow from follicles thick and luscious strands that had once fallen off but are good as new. The anxious phase of shock loss is not something easy to go through but once it is over so is the anxiety, because of the fact that the fallen hair grows back eventually with all its beauty and strength. The loss was not permanent but temporary and takes about four to six months to recover from this kind of loss.
